At Cuesta College’s 29th Annual Scholarship Reception on August 3rd, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) presented a check to the Cuesta College Foundation in the amount of $100,000 to support the second year of the Cuesta College Promise Scholarship. It was announced in June that PG&E was a major gift donor involved in the college’s expansion of the Promise Scholarship to include a second year of fee-free education to all San Luis Obispo County high school graduates.

“I am very pleased that PG&E is able to expand its wonderful partnership with Cuesta College in such a meaningful way with this donation, allowing the College to extend its outstanding Cuesta Promise Scholarship program to provide SLO County high school graduates with now a second year of fee-free education,” said PG&E Vice President of Nuclear Generation and Chief Nuclear Officer Jim Welsch, who is a Cuesta College alum. “What a fantastic opportunity this is for the students and our community.”

PG&E has a long history of supporting Cuesta College. Over the past 30 years, the company has donated $700,000 to the college. PG&E also assisted with the construction of a laboratory on the SLO Campus for the college’s Department of Electronics and Electrical Technology. And in 2016, Cuesta College partnered with PG&E to offer a Certificate of Specialization in Nuclear Energy Systems to develop a pool of trained nuclear energy technicians and provide a career pathway for students and technicians to gain employment at PG&E or any nuclear power plant in the country.

“Cuesta College’s partnership with PG&E has positively impacted student success for three decades, and with the most recent donation to the Promise Scholarship, the young people of our community will benefit in perpetuity,” said Executive Director of the Cuesta College Foundation/Advancement Shannon Hill. “Our generous donors, like PG&E, help us break down financial barriers for students every day.”
